Sulawesi Earthquake and Tsunami, Indonesia

On 28 Sep, an earthquake of magnitude 7.4 hit Central Sulawesi, Indonesia, causing massive destruction in Donggala, Palu and Mamuju. According to reports, more than 400 have been killed in the quake and post-quake 2m high tsunami. More than 530 people have been injured and initial government forecasts suggest that about 934 villages have been affected by the earthquake and tsunami.

Nyan Win, 18, lives with his parents in one of the crowded urban areas in Myanmar. He has been a sponsored child since he was 8 years old.

Nyan Win’s parents are odd job workers who struggle to feed and support their three children. He was originally reluctant and shy and could not communicate well with others or make friends. But when World Vision introduced the child club in Nyan Win’s community, his life started to change.

With Typhoon Mangkhut nearing landfall, World Vision prepares our response team to respond in alignment with the government’s national and local disaster response efforts. We have prepositioned relief items that can cater to 4,000 families in the initial phase, including hygiene kits (toothbrush, toothpaste, laundry and bath soaps, malong, sanitary pads, nail cutter, underwear) and non-food items like blankets and mosquito nets.
