SINGAPORE : MediaCorp and World Vision have joined hands to raise funds for victims of Typhoon Morakot - the worst to hit Taiwan in 50 years.

The fundraiser, dubbed "Radio's 88-Hour Drive-A-Thon", will see eight cars driving around Singapore to collect funds and raise awareness for the survivors of the disaster.

The money will be used to build shelters for people living in areas heavily affected by Typhoon Morakot.

Last year, MediaCorp's radio stations raised close to S$100,000 to help build a school for the children affected by the Sichuan earthquake.

The cars were flagged off at Caldecott Broadcast Centre on Thursday morning. The Drive-A-Thon will end at MacPherson on Sunday.

Florence Lian, MD of Radio, MediaCorp, said: "Every year, our radio stations are committed for charity... and on the company level, we are also there as a call to action for needs that arises.

"And it so happened Typhoon Morakot is such a need, that's why we're rallying Singaporeans together to yet again answer to (this) need that has cropped up." - CNA

Individuals who wish to give toward the Typhoon Morakot relief effort can make contributions to the Typhoon Morakot Relief Fund.
