HopeChild Sponsorship

“Giving HOPE to a HIV-Affected Child”

Who is a HopeChild?

A HopeChild lives in an area with a high prevalence of HIV. Because of this, the child is vulnerable to catching the disease and requires extra assistance. However, this does not mean that the child has HIV.

What is HopeChild Sponsorship?

HopeChild Sponsorship is a community development programme that focusses on improving the total well-being of a needy child with a long-term commitment to reduce poverty and HIV and AIDS.

World Vision works in partnership with the communities to help identify the critical needs and provide the resources that enable them to discover and use their ideas and skills to move from poverty to self-sufficiency.

Through such a development process, people discover the barriers that prevent them from moving towards a better future. This helps them to deal not only with immediate problems like malnutrition and disease, but also underlying causes such as illiteracy, unemployment and dependency.

In addition, with AIDS scarring every aspect of human society, World Vision is prioritising efforts to help children orphaned or made vulnerable by AIDS to prevent the spread of HIV and equip communities to care for affected children and families.

How will my support benefit the children?

When you sponsor a HopeChild from a HIV/AIDS high prevalent community – Yaya Gulale Area Development Programme in Ethiopia, your contribution of $50 per month through World Vision will help provide the child with:

  • Nutritious food

  • Access to clean water

  • Basic healthcare including HIV intervention

  • Education

  • Income generation

In addition, you will be strengthening care for HIV orphans and vulnerable children assisted through the OVC (Orphans and Vulnerable Children) Hope Programme in Tiya Community in Ethiopia. Tiya is a small rural town, located 85km south west of Addis Ababa in Sodo Woreda. The OVC Hope Programme is established based on World Vision HIV/AIDS Hope Initiative’s three core models of Prevention, Care and Advocacy, launched in response to the HIV pandemic.

At the end of the day, the ultimate goal is to see families and communities reach a point of self-sufficiency, thereby giving every child a better and healthier place to live in.

How does World Vision help these children?

Your sponsorship contribution is pooled with the donations of other Sponsors who are supporting the same Area Development Programme to implement development activities that will improve the lives of your child, family and also other families living in the community.

In addition, your support will help to lessen the impact of HIV/AIDS on orphans and vulnerable children in these following ways:

(a) Prevention

Educational materials and advocacy campaigns to heighten awareness on HIV and its lethal effects on the communities, with special focus on 5-18 year-olds as the high risk group.

Key areas of focus:

  • Facilitating care for orphans and vulnerable children, with emphasis on child protection.

  • Strengthening community-led child protection initiatives.

  • Contributing to the development of policies and programmes to promote HIV prevention among children under 18.

(b) Care

Organise Community Care Coalitions comprising committees of community individuals to provide support to orphans and vulnerable children.

Key areas of focus:

  • Monitor children’s health, nutrition, education and psycho-social support.

  • Protect children against abuse and neglect.

  • Provide antiretroviral medication and immune boosters to strengthen HIV infected children and families.

  • Train volunteers and caregivers to look after children’s needs in the absence of their parents.

  • Provide medical care to orphans and vulnerable children.

  • Vocational training for older orphans to help them find proper jobs with stable income so that they can support the rest of their siblings.

(c) Advocacy

  • Prioritise efforts to call for local, national and international changes to structures and laws to mitigate the impact of HIV on those at risk.

What happens when I sponsor a HopeChild?

As a Hopechild sponsor, you will be uniquely linked to a child living in Yaya Gulale Community in Ethiopia. You can build a relationship with this child through letter correspondences or even visit him/her. You will also receive a photo and personal profile of your sponsored child, family, community and an annual report on your child’s progress.

At the same time, you will receive periodic reports on how your support is benefitting the lives of other orphans and children left vulnerable by AIDS in Tiya Community, Ethiopia.
