Abu Ramad Women’s Centre: Hope to Women in Sudan’s Conflict

As conflict in Sudan continues, the situation worsens. Countless individuals are fleeing the capital, Khartoum, seeking refuge in neighbouring countries and within Sudan itself, including Blue Nile state.

Women, especially, bear the brunt of the turmoil, facing dire challenges with limited access to healthcare and heightened vulnerability to gender-based violence and other forms of abuse amidst the conflict.

Nestled in the heart of Blue Nile State, the Abu Ramad Women’s Centre, stands as a beacon of hope and resilience for Sudanese women.

The women here are not merely surviving; they are gaining independence, against all odds. Gathering to learn and create, they are acquiring valuable new skills such as soap making, tailoring, and leather crafting, facilitated in part by World Vision Sudan.

This empowers them and provides essential financial support for their families, amid the soaring cost of living.

Istiqlal, a mother of four, has been attending the Abu Ramad Centre. She is eager to develop as an entrepreneur and finds joy in being able to support her family.

Istiqlal shares, “Since joining the centre, I've been able to create clothing for my children, saving money and contributing to our household income.”

Her sentiment resonates with many others who have found independence through the centre's initiatives.

The women of Abu Ramad forge ahead, their hands busy with the creation of goods that not only sustain their families but also provide a sense of purpose and pride. Their products, crafted with care and skill, find their way to nearby towns, Damazine and Roseries.

Rahma, who manages the Abu Ramad Women's Center, explains, “Approximately 150 women directly benefit from our income-generating activities. The funds used to operate the centre are generated from the sales of our products.

By providing women with access to skills training, and economic opportunities, not only do we unlock their individual potential, but we also uplift entire communities to which they belong. Even in the midst of crisis, hope and determination can spark real change.
