School holidays should be a time for children to play and have fun, but Altanshagai and his 8-years-old sister, Altankhundaga, must live away from their family and work as child jockeys. Altanshagai (13) lives with his parents and three other siblings in Selenge Provice of Mongolia and studies at 7th grade. As the oldest son of the family, he is responsible to look after his other siblings, but he has been too busy working to provide for his family this summer.
Around 400 children like Altanshagai work as child jockeys in Selenge Province alone. The only reason they or their parents take such high risks to ride horses is money. Altanshagai's future is unsure. Right now, he is busy studying for school and then busy working throughout summer holidays to provide for his family. Although he understands the danger of being a child jockey, he most probably believes that helping his family earning income is more important than his health or even life.
Join us as we step into the world of children like Altanshagai. Learn how child sponsorship allows children to go to school, improve accessibility to clean water and equip families with livelihood skills so that children like Altanshagai can be free to dream of a brighter future.
