World Vision assists communities affected by earthquake in Yunnan

World Vision staff found two metre-long cracks in mud-brick houses of Hongguang village in Pianjiao Township, Yunnan.

On November 2, 2009, an earthquake measuring 5.0 on the Richter scale rocked Yunnan Province, southwest of China. The epicentre was located in the area of Pingchuan Township (平川镇), at a depth of about 10 kilometres.

In both Bingchuan and Xiangyun counties, an estimated 285,600 people are affected and a total of 34,000 houses are damaged.

World Vision’s Yongsheng Area Development Programme (ADP) is one of the ADPs affected in the quake. Thankfully, all of the children are safe.

Pianjiao Township is located just 10 km from the epicentre of the quake. A total of eight villages have been affected. The three villages that are nearest to the epicentre - Shuichong (水冲), Donghua (东华) and Hongguang (红光村)- suffered adverse impact from the quake.

In those three villages, around 300 mud-brick houses have developed cracks, some walls have collapsed and objects have fallen off walls. It will take months for villagers to be able to completely repair their cracked and damaged houses. With the onset of winter, quilts are the most urgent need for the communities.

Besides quilts, families from the three villages are in urgent need of food due to the poor harvest resulting from drought this summer. Many families are facing food shortages this winter. For a start, World Vision is planning to provide 1,164 quilts to some 582 families whose houses have been damaged in the quake.
