Relief goods reach Typhoon-hit families in Vietnam

World Vision Vietnam started providing rice, instant noodle packs and fresh water to affected families in Central Vietnam immediately after Typhoon Ketsana slammed the country on September 29 with plans to increase the relief to the affected families in the coming days.

“We have begun our initial relief to help the children and their families in Danang, Quang Tri and Quang Nam Provinces,” said National Director Daniel Selvanayagam.

“World Vision is appealing for funds to conduct a relief response for 50,000 people in 14 World Vision sites in the central region,” he added.

“World Vision will lead the rapid assessment team including United Nation Programme Coordination Groups 10, the People's Aid Coordinating Committee (PACCOM) and other humanitarian agencies such as CARE International, Habitat and Save the Children to Quang Nam. We will also support the assessment teams in Quang Ngai and Quang Tri,” the director said.

Government statistics showed that Typhoon Ketsana killed 92 people, injured 199 others and left 12 others missing in the central and central highlands provinces. More than 6,376 houses have been destroyed and 171,000 others were damaged or have had their roofs blown off. The disaster has caused initial loss of VND 3,064 billion (US$170 million).

The Vietnamese government is sending helicopters to rescue people in isolated areas and providing food aid to typhoon-affected people. Ahead of the typhoon the government evacuated more than 350,000 people in the central provinces to safety.

To date, torrential rains resulting from the typhoon have caused serious flooding and landslides, blocking many roads to the central provinces.

“Flooding and landslides have been reported in six World Vision project areas in Quang Tri and Quang Nam,” said Le Van Duong, Relief and Disaster Mitigation Coordinator. “Our staff tell us the flood water is about two metres high in some areas.”

Thirteen World Vision Area Development Programs and one special project were in the typhoon’s pathway. They are located in Danang City, Quang Tri, Quang Nam and Quang Ngai provinces.

Area Development Programme supported by World Vision Singapore in Vietnam is unaffected.
