Laos: World Vision Typhoon Ketsana preparedness plans
Wednesday, 30 September 2009 04:35

As Typhoon Ketsana approaches and is predicted to hit early morning local time on Wednesday, Sept 30, WV Laos is concerned about possible flooding and landslides, especially in upland areas and populated areas along the rivers.

Damage to crops is as serious a prospect as damages to homes and roads, as the rice harvest is fast approaching.  Secondary effects of the storm may come in the form of a food shortage in the next few months

World Vision Laos has started deploying communications staff to the provinces most likely to be affected including, Savannakhet, Khammouane, and Bolikhamxay provinces.

World Vision Laos does not have an in-country relief reserve, and may sound the alarm for potential immediate funding needs.

World Vision Laos is taking the following steps to prepare staff and communities for the potential massive impact of the storm.

  1. World Vision Laos Provincial staff teams are working with local governments in their areas to alert villages to take needed precautions such as evacuations where possible.
  1. Staff are assigned to relocate to provinces in small teams to support provincial staff preparations and response.  This will include plans and actions to buy rice, clothing, water tablets, blankets and basic foods locally according to assessed needs and transport them to the affected areas.
  1. Regional World Vision offices are also in touch with World Vision Laos to provide information on the approaching storm, possible effects, and will support in mobilising resources ahead of the storm's arrival.
  1. Provincial response teams will not only alert and assist villages to prepare for the storm, but will also create contingency plans for rapid response to affected areas.
  1. Staff are advised to stay in safe places and take precautionary measures for themselves and their families.
  1. World Vision Laos have begun open dialogues with other international NGOs, UN organisations, and the government for possible support and collaboration.
