In January, a severe snowstorm struck Uvurkhangai, the hometown of World Vision’s Mongolian sponsored children, and its neighbouring villages. The severely cold weather claimed over 12,000 livestock all across the country and blanketed 80 percent of the land in snow, which varied in depth from 10–35 cm in thickness. The average temperature was -28 degrees Celsius, whereas the coldest surfaces reached - 40 degrees.
Although the weather has warmed to a more bearable temperature hovering around zero, the overwhelming loss of livestock has left many families in a state of hopelessness. Over the last two months, World Vision has distributed food and nutrition, healthcare, fodder and fuel to the victims, thanks to generous contributions from the public. World Vision continues to help the families of Uvurkhangai and other 11 affected provinces in Mongolia to regain a sense of normalcy. Beyond the initial phase of emergency food response, the immediate challenge is to provide food security for more than 24,000 herder households devastated by the unforgiving snowstorm. The present crisis is far from over with a financial shortfall of about S$677,000 to support the entire emergency and rehabilitation plans.
