Emergency Relief

Would you feed this to your child if he was hungry?

Rotten cassava cooked with dead rats!

Seven months ago, everything was completely destroyed overnight… including their only source of food.

To the tourist, Zambia is the “Home of the Victoria Falls and spectacular wildlife”. It is a beautiful country known for its lush,
green and rich forests. The country is landlocked in south-central Africa, surrounded by Angola, Zaire, Mozambique and Zimbabwe.

But look deeper into Zambia and you will find the region of Mwinilunga (situated in the Zambezi Valley) inhabited by some 140,000 people
whose only food for survival is the vegetable and fruit, called cassava that they grow themselves.

The Great Flood [Click here to read more]
Since October 2006, strong heavy rains caused serious flooding in many regions around Zambia.  In Mwinilunga, the floods were so severe that they wiped out all the farmers’ crops – cassava, their staple food and main source of livelihood – with many families also losing their homes.

Children watch helplessly at the scale of devastation of their homes; and some have lost their parents or siblings to the unfortunate tragedy.

Empty Stomachs; Destroyed Homes; Failing Health…

Due to the devastating floods, more than 100,000 villagers were harshly affected and left many children severely malnourished. More than 3,000 families lost their homes and livelihoods and some, unfortunately did not survive the prolonged hunger.
