Emergency Relief

No food to eat

There is almost nothing left to eat now, rotten cassavas are found everywhere and some starving children have no choice but to eat them, just to fill their empty stomachs.  Many children have stopped going to school because they are just too weak and hungry or are busy foraging for any edible food or living creatures in the forests.
BEFORE THE FLOOD:  Main source of food for the Zambians; cassava, a tapioca-like fruit, rich in vitamins and fibre.
NOW: The awful remnants of rotten cassva

Disease-stricken bodies
Children are falling sick due to malaria and other waterborne diseases, and the community is facing the possibility of a cholera outbreak.  Health supplies are running low and humanitarian agencies like World Vision are fighting against
time to save the lives of the people.

Over 480 houses have been destroyed by the floods. Many families are squatting in temporary shelters in unhygienic conditions.
Since the flood, more and more children are falling sick to waterborne diseases due to drinking from unsafe water sources.

YOU and I can do something today!

Almost 18,000 families were left homeless and more than 2,880 children have been stricken with malaria and other waterborne diseases. Many are currently suffering from acute malnutrition, some having not eaten for weeks. World Vision Singapore has committed some S$232,500  to support the relief operations in Mwinilunga. Join us to provide relief aid to the worst affected households; delivering blankets, warm clothing, mosquito nets, clean water and emergency supplies. We hope to rush our help to these victims by September 2007 to stop the death toll from rising further.

Food for thought:
Our lives are much better than these poor suffering children only because we are blessed to be born in a country unaffected by natural disasters. Children in Zambia do not have a choice.
