Devotion: When God does not seem to answer

By John Robb, Director of Global Prayer Partnerships

"The LORD is far from the wicked but he hears the prayer of the righteous."
Proverbs 15:29

When God does not seem to answer our prayers, it does not mean that He does not listen or care. As our Heavenly Father, who acts in our best interests, His answers can be 'yes', 'no' or 'wait awhile'. God delayed His response to Abraham to build perseverance and faith in the ‘father of many nations’. In the same way, God is preparing you and me for the special destiny He has in store for us.

Prayer can be obstructed by sin whether it is personal or corporate. Humbling ourselves, repenting and persisting in faith are key elements to unblocking the sin that hinders God’s answers. World Vision prayer initiatives, as in the recent crisis in Kenya, have demonstrated the power of repentance. In conditions of conflict and unrest, prayer initiatives have led to ceasefires, peace agreements, reconciliation and healing in numerous countries.

Some actions to take when God does not seem to answer are:

  • Take time to listen to God
  • Ask according to His will
  • Obey the Holy Spirit’s leading
  • Relinquish the situation to His loving care
  • Delight yourself in the Lord

Ole Hallesby writes, “When God grants our prayers, it is because He loves us. When He does not, it is also because He loves us.” Let us persevere in faith and prayer while we listen and obey.
