A Prayer for Haiti

By Valdir Steuernagel, Theologian-at-Large, World Vision International

In the midst of the Haiti earthquake, we tell ourselves that there is no time for questions because we need to answer to the people in need.

We should be enormously grateful that we can do that - help at this hour is sacredly needed and given.

But as we move on, the questions come again and again.

Praying together might not give us an objective answer but through prayer, we are able to see the tears on our Lord's face.

He is crying too.

Together with a Celtic prayer I invite us to say:

Lord, You have always given bread for the coming day;
and though I am poor, today I believe.

Lord, You have always given strength for the coming day;
and though I am weak, today I believe.

Lord, You have always given peace for the coming day;
and though of anxious heart, today I believe.

Lord, You have always kept me safe in trials;
and now, tired as I am, today I believe.

Lord, You have always marked the road for the coming day;
and though it may be hidden, today I believe.

Lord, You have always lightened this darkness of mine;
and though the night is here, today I believe.

Lord, You have always spoken when time was ripe;
and though you be silent now, today I believe.

Let us remember to pray for our colleagues in Haiti, the citizens there and all those who are responding to the disaster.
