God’s provision for our needs

By Edward Mubiru, World Vision East Africa Region

Psalm 23

(NIV)

The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not want.
He makes me lie down in green pastures,
He leads me beside quiet waters, He restores my soul.
He guides me in paths of righteousness for His name’s sake.
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.
You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies.
You anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows.
Surely goodness and love will follow me all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the house of the LORD forever.

Reflections

1. God’s provision is personal

The way God provided for and related to David caused him to recognise God as “my shepherd” (vs. 1). When David understood that God was fully in his life, his declaration of “I lack nothing” seemed natural. God provided for David in a way that nurtured David’s trust and sense of security despite all kinds of adversities.

2. God’s provision is complete

God leads us from green pastures (nutrition) (vs. 2) to quiet waters (not only water to drink but also emotional rest) and to guidance into paths of righteousness (spiritual nurture) (vs. 3). Even in the valley of death, David found that God protected him from physical destruction (vs. 4). It is worth nothing that God’s “rod and staff” do not mean intimidation, torture or unnecessary control. These instruments brought comfort in David’s heart (correction and guidance) instead.

3. God’s provision leads His children towards the kingdom of God

As a result of God’s wholesome provision, David had confidence in the face of evil and death (vs. 4). Even more, his “cup overflows” (vs. 5). His greatest joy is that he “will dwell in the house in the LORD forever” – God’s ultimate provision!
