Children in Crisis
Happy Barang no longer eats food from the dumps

Since their father’s death 10 years ago, Barang, 11, Lim Kearn, 15 and Rath, 17, have been living on the streets of Phnom Penh. His mother was unable to support the family and lived from hand to mouth, with the food and scraps they collected from the rubbish dumpsites everyday.

In 2005, World Vision found Barang on the streets near the Olympic Stadium and took him to the Bamboo Shoots Children’s Centre where World Vision fed, clothed and sent him to school.

Today, Barang and his family are reunited with their aunt who lives in the Bati district, Takeo, where World Vision is implementing an Area Development Programme to build sustainability into the people’s lives.

2007: A happy and grateful family. From left: Lim Kearn, Barang (centre) and their mother.

Barang now studies at Grade 3 at Doung Commune School. His brother, Rath has found work as a cleaner and is now able to help out with the family’s expenses.

“I have enough to eat now and I hope to be a teacher when I grow up,” said Barang wistfully.

Without your support, World Vision could never have been able to help families like Barang’s. THANK YOU!

2005: The street was home to Barang (right) and his brother, Rath. They practically ate anything they could find in the rubbish dumps. In June 2006, World Vision Singapore raised the awareness of Barang and his family’s plight and received generous donations from supporters to help children like them.

Barang's story shows that there is something we can all do to rescue these children from the streets. [Click here to find out how]
