FY2008 Financial Highlights

In FY2008, World Vision Singapore, with the strong support of our child sponsors and donors, continued to post another blessed year of giving and service to the needy children and their families in Asia and Africa.

We are thankful to God that World Vision Singapore received S$10,332,639 in donations in FY2008. This enabled the organisation to help some 107,870 children and benefited more than 1,558,7000 people in developing countries.

In line with our mandate and accountability to our supporters to keep expenses low so that more can be provided to assist the impoverished communities, the total expenditure of our office for FY2008 comprising of administration, communication and public information was S$2,037,049 or 20% of total donations.

World Vision Singapore received Gifts-in-Kind (GIK) donations amounting to S$345,099 for the needy communities assisted by our organisation.

Through our child sponsors and donors, we are able to apportion S$1,552,240 towards World Vision International’s emergency relief and rehabilitation efforts around the world. The remaining S$90,621 will be sent next year – which will make up the full 100% of donations received for emergency relief and rehabilitation in FY2008.

On 2 May 2008, Cyclone Nargis hit Myanmar, sweeping two states and ravaging seven townships in the Ayeyarwady region. Thousands of lives were lost and many more were left homeless. Generous Singaporeans contributed S$1,052,597 to the relief and rehabilitation efforts, benefiting more than 347,000 people.

A powerful 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck China’s Wenchuan County in north Sichuan on 12 May 2008. World Vision received S$229,861 and responded to some 700,000 people who received immediate help such as food and shelter materials. A long-term relief and rehabilitation plan that will benefit some 1.1 million people has also been implemented.

Donations to the work of World Vision Singapore do not benefit from tax exemption or deductibles. As a foreign charity registered in Singapore, we are also not permitted to actively solicit public funds without a valid permit from the Commissioner of Charities.

Despite the challenging environment, we are grateful to our child sponsors and donors who continue to support our ministry of helping the marginalised and oppressed.
