WORLD VISION PRAYER GUIDE, August 2008

31 Days of August

1. Guatemala – Please pray:

  • that God provides the basic needs for the communities affected by recent flooding and landslides and that they may experience peace and comfort during this stressful time.
  • for protection on staff who are assisting in the response.
  • that the rains and landslides cease and that the recovery efforts are implemented quickly.

2. Zimbabwe

  • Thank God that the government of Zimbabwe has allowed World Vision to resume some relief operations.  
  • Please continue to pray that the NGO ban is completely lifted and that all NGOs can resume operations to serve those in need.
  • Also pray for wise national leadership to address the issues of incredibly high inflation and a growing food crisis.

3. 2008 International AIDS Conference, Mexico City

  • Praise God for positioning WV to play a key role in this important conference this week.
  • Pray that the 20,000 delegates gathering will discover new solutions to assist in eradicating HIV/AIDS and that they leave the conference with renewed commitment to continue their efforts of helping those affected by HIV/AIDS.

4. El Salvador

  • Please pray for the families of the 31 victims of a tragic accident in which a church bus was swept into a raging river.  Pray also that the government of El Salvador addresses these critical infrastructure needs to reduce the risk of these type of events.

5. Niger – Pray that:

  • God gives discernment to our nation’s leaders to avoid bloodshed in our country after the arrest of the ex-Prime Minister.
  • our staff truly rest and are restored physically, emotionally and spiritually as they take holidays this month.
  • God protects children from contracting malaria during the rainy season and that parents appropriately use mosquito nets.

6. United Kingdom
The inaugural WV People & Culture Summer School is being held in the UK from 28 July - 8 August with over 100 people involved and over 50 nationalities represented.  Please pray:

  • for safe journeys for all the teaching staff and delegates.
  • that the event is a valuable time of learning and relationship-building.
  • that ongoing learning, support and networking continues after the event.

7. Indonesia

  • Thank God for allowing us to be His instrument through WV Indonesia’s ministry and for all the people that contribute to the process.
  • Pray that the value of transformation is exhibited in each WV ministry area so children can have fullness of life.
  • Pray that God impacts all participants of the ADP Management Team retreat ending today.  

8. West Africa Region – Pray for:

  • stability in West Africa and the surrounding countries in these challenging economic times.
  • lasting peace in Chad.
  • strength for staff in the Regional and National offices to enable them to continue accomplishing their work within communities.
  • safety and refreshment for staff going on holidays.  

9. Senegal – Please pray:

  • against the deteriorating conditions in Senegalese households due to high food and energy prices, and pray for wise management of the situation by authorities. They officially continue to deny any ‘famine’.
  • for wisdom for Senegalese President Abdoulaye Wade. Pray that he will have a change of heart and give a more positive critique of NGOS as well as be more open-minded to political opposition and the media.
  • for diversified sources of income and greater financial means.  The falling rate of the US dollar, the global funding crisis of some Support Offices and high inflation rates are eroding development budgets for the office.  
  • for a good rainy season.

10. Ghana

  • Praise God for two successful staff retreats.
  • Please pray for guidance in formulating a transitional strategy for the Ghana Water Project.  
  • Pray that the new Operations Team Leader adapts quickly to their new role. 
  • Intercede for new opportunities for staff who may be experiencing a period of transition.

11. Malawi – Praise God for:

  • peace in Malawi and pray for preparations for the Presidential election in May 2009.
  • the successful rollout of Community Transformational Development enhancement programme in five ADPs and pray that the remaining ADPs have the opportunity to witness the positive outcomes.  

12. South Korea – Pray:

  • that the Board has opportunities to engage in World Vision’s ministry through its committee activities.
  • that WV Korea Children's Choir impacts and motivates people to partner with World Vision during their performances in 20 churches in the United States.
  • that 120 children from 12 domestic programmes develop a child rights policy during a Child Rights Camp on 19-21 August in Seoul.

13. Middle East and Eastern Europe Region

  • Thank God for answering our prayers to fill the vacancies of Regional Vice President and Human Resources Director.
  • Please pray for the formation of a strong regional team around our new leadership.
  • Pray that God touches the lives of children during several ongoing summer camps.

14. Bosnia and Herzegovina

  • Praise God for the successful three-day staff retreat in June that has contributed to our team-building process.
  • Pray for economic stability because each day more people are unable to provide food for their hungry families due to rising prices.

15. Lebanon

  • Thank God for His power which is made perfect in our weakness.
  • Continue to pray for the implementation of the LIFT process and our openness to the leading of the Holy Spirit.
  • Pray that our office experiences the presence and power of God.

16. Albania – Pray:

  • that children enjoy their summer vacations and are energised for the upcoming school year.
  • that parents and educators participating in the Child Protection trainings will be receptive and open to learning how to care and protect for their children.
  • for an open mind and energy as we approach the final design and redesign stages with communities.

17. Jerusalem, West Bank, Gaza

  • Praise God for the truce in Gaza over the last few weeks that drastically reduced the violence, eased tensions on both sides and reopened the crossing of goods. Pray that all parties continue to respect the truce and implement their responsibilities in a timely fashion, and that the Gaza blockade be removed.
  • Pray that children would have opportunities to participate in summer camp to help them cope with their traumatic circumstances, and that they would find safety in more places.
  • Pray that farmers working the land yield a good harvest and that restrictions on their movement are removed so that they would be able to get their produce to market on time and cost-effectively.

18. Asia Pacific Region – Please pray:

  • for our colleagues in Myanmar as they formulate a recovery strategy for the Nargis cyclone.  Pray also that required funding is made available for the long-term response.
  • for endurance for staff in China as they serve people affected by the earthquake in the rural areas where access is difficult.

19. Hong Kong

  • Please continue to pray for God's protection on all upcoming sponsors’ visits and project visits from students over the summer.
  • Please give thanks for a productive academic year and pray for favour as the Public Education teams create plans with schools and churches for FY09.

20. Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (DPRK- North Korea)

  • Praise God for significant steps taken toward peace and reconciliation on the Korean Peninsula, specifically through the Six-Party Talks to  discuss security issues.   
  • Pray for over 550,000 children, the elderly and pregnant and nursing women in Chaggang and North Pyongan Provinces who will receive food rations as a part of US Government's Food for Peace emergency assistance programme. Pray that food aid will help them cope with widespread hunger and malnutrition and ultimately restore them to good health.
  • Pray for four World Vision staff that will be based in the DPRK for the implementation of the emergency assistance programme.

21. Malaysia – Please pray:

  • for Malaysia's unstable political condition and that peace and harmony prevail.
  • for the organising team, participants, good weather and for the fulfilment of our commitments to beneficiaries during the 30-Hour Famine Camp. It will be held nationwide from 23-24 August for 6,000 to 8,000 expected campers.
  • that the public is receptive to the plight of those affected by HIV and AIDS through our touring exhibit lasting through 2008.
  • that the passion staff have for serving and following Christ is continually renewed.

22. Pacific Development Group ( Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, Vanuatu) - Pray for:

  • effective rehabilitation and restoration work in the Oro Province of Papua New Guinea that was recently flooded.
  • good weather and safe travels for staff travelling by sea between island provinces. 
  • guidance for the Audit team working with our office.

23. Nepal – Pray:

  • for that those living in areas prone to flooding and landslides during the current monsoon rains would be protected and their livelihoods would be sustained.
  • for wisdom as our government is formed, and for a peaceful election of a new President and Vice President.
  • for the timely completion of all project plans in our 10 ADPs.

24. Kenya

  • Thank God for the coalition government and the general peace we are experiencing.
  • Praise God for the Internally Displaced People that are gradually returning home and pray that the government and other agencies assisting with this challenge exercise good judgment.
  • Please intercede for those affected by the food crisis and drought, particularly malnourished children, and pray for strength and adequate resources to respond.
  • Pray that our interventions impact children and their communities during this last quarter.

25. Northern Sudan

  • Praise God for those who enable us to serve children and their families and pray that their generosity continues.
  • Pray that God protects our staff, their families and visitors as they travel and work in this dangerous context.
  • Pray for peace in the nation and that opposing parties agree to talk with one another rather than resort to violence.  The peace process is at risk following the International Criminal Court’s indictment of Sudanese President Omar Hassan al-Bashir for war crimes.

26. Burundi

  • Thank God that our ADP assessments were successful.  
  • Praise God for the return of the National Liberation Front (FNL) leader from exile and for the on-going cease-fire between FNL and the government.  Pray that both sides continue to engage in the peace process.
  • Pray that the economy stabilises and that prices decrease.

27. Microfinance/Vision Fund – Please pray:

  • that those receiving loans will effectively pay back their loans in a timely manner and they will enable them to break out of poverty and bless others.
  • pray for the global integration efforts of Microfinance, specifically for leadership as they guide it and the staff of microfinance institutions around the world.
  • for the microfinance institution in Zimbabwe called Pundutso Microfinance. Pray that it will continue to have the resources and stamina to provide economic resources for people in need during this time of unrest.

28. Rwanda – Please pray:

  • that the pain and trauma of the 1994 genocide victims continue to heal through God’s intervention and existing agencies.
  • for an end to the high incidence of an unknown illness among World Vision staff members.

29. Zambia

  • Thank God for the continued peace that prevails in our nation.  
  • Pray for protection and strength for the Senior Management Team and staff as they work and travel.
  • Please pray for travelling mercies and a lasting impact for a group of pastors visiting Zamtam ADP.

30. Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC)

  • Praise God for the powerful DRC prayer initiative held last May in Kinshasa and pray that reconciliation and healing continues.
  • Thank the Lord that the National Director’s wife is recovering and walk by herself again.
  • Pray that the predicted volcanic eruption in eastern DRC will not bring devastation to the local residents.

31. Health for WV staff and families

  • Pray for the health and well-being for all WV staff and their families.  Pray that God would comfort those who have lost loved one and gives peace to families experiencing periods of difficult health-related issues.
