Asian Disasters Update

In the past few weeks, a spate of natural disasters has devastated Asia, causing millions of people the loss of their homes and livelihoods.

The following is an update as of October 26, 2009:

 

Typhoon Ketsana:

  • World Vision provided relief goods for some 20,000 families or 100,000 people in inaccessible areas in Marikina, Pasig, Cainta, and in Rizal province in the Philippines. Non- food items include cooking utensils, mosquito nets, blankets, plastic mats, medicines and educational materials for children.
  • World Vision has also set up six Child Friendly Spaces in Cainta, Rizal, Marikina, Pasig and Ultra, which have benefited some 4,000 children.
  • In Vietnam, World Vision has provided relief food assistance to some 24,000 people, and plans to continue relief efforts for some 65,000 people in Danang City, Quang Tri, Quang Nam and Quang Ngai provinces till March 2010.
  • World Vision is working alongside the government, UN agencies and other international NGOs to meet pressing needs such as food aid and shelter in the hardest hit provinces in all affected countries.
  • In the longer term, World Vision aims to help the affected children and families regain normalcy in their lives by helping them rebuild their livelihoods, and will incorporate plans to ensure that schoul children in affected project areas will receive continuity in their schouling as well.

 

West Sumatra Quake:

  • World Vision is targeting to help some 60,000 people in the most hard-hit areas of Padang, Pariaman and Agam districts.
  • World Vision has distributed over 9,971 family kits and 1,559 children’s kits consisting of blankets, sleeping mats, tarpaulins, sanitary items and soap. Some 4,000 water containers, 15 septic tanks and 10 portable toilets have also been distributed among the affected families. Mobile clinics have also been set up in Padang and Pariaman since October 8.
  • Currently, three Child Friendly Spaces have been set up, benefiting some 400 children.

India Floods:

  • World Vision has completed its first phase of relief response to the India floods successfully, meeting the needs of some 11,600 severely-affected families in Mehboobnagar and Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh, and Bijapur in Karnataka.
  • Food, non-food* items and dry rations** have been distributed to these families and World Vision is working with the Government’s health department to conduct medical camps in the villages.
  • World Vision’s next phase of relief response will be concentrating on the shelter needs of the people. For a start, some 1,500 families will receive shelter materials.
  • World Vision targets to help a total of 25,000 families in Mehboobnagar and Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh, and Bijapur in Karnataka.

*Non-food items include sarees, dhoti, bed sheets and floor mats.
**Dry ration includes rice (15 kg), lentils, cooking oil (one litre), salt and sugar.
