Cyclone Nargis: An Anniversary Update

On 2 May 2008, Cyclone Nargis ripped through Yangon and Ayeryarwady Divisions in Myanmar, leaving some 138,000 people dead or missing, and severely affecting some 2.4 million people.

To mark the one-year anniversary of Cyclone Nargis, World Vision Singapore organised a presentation on Tuesday, 28 April 2009 at The Giving Place, National Volunteer & Philanthropy Centre. The presenter, Mr Aung Naing, is the Operations Manager for the Cyclone Nargis Recovery Programme in World Vision Myanmar.

Attended by some 24 World Vision supporters and donors, the Cyclone Nargis Anniversary Update presentation detailed the progress of World Vision’s rebuilding and rehabilitation efforts in Yangon and Ayeyarwady Divisions. Besides explaining in detail the technicalities and challenges of the rebuilding and rehabilitation work, Mr Aung Naing also shared how World Vision handles cases of children who are orphaned by Cyclone Nargis. With the help of the authorities and local communities, World Vision traces the children’s family and brings them back to their relatives. If there are no surviving family members or relatives, the government will ensure that other measures are in place to care for the children.

World Vision is currently in the mid-term recovery phase for the people affected by Cyclone Nargis that will end by December 2009. World Vision’s long-term plans in rebuilding and rehabilitation for affected communities will be completed by April 2011.
