A Date with a Star at Dempsey Hill

The Dempsey Hill area is well-known for its stylish dining outlets, quaint antique shops and boutique wine bars. It’s a place popular for Sunday brunch, a special date night or a girls’ night out. Few people know however, that the brains behind this popular chill-out spot also have hearts of gold.

Country City Investment Pte. Ltd., which manages the Dempsey Hill area, has been partnering with World Vision since the beginning of 2009 to do their part to improve the lives of needy and vulnerable children around the world. First, the company chose to sponsor 10 children from countries all over Asia. Not content with doing just that, Country City Investment threw the doors open and played host to a special World Vision event.

So on a balmy June night, Dempsey Hill sparkled with star power. In her role as World Vision’s 30 HOUR FAMINE Ambassador 2009, international singing sensation Chang Hui Mei (more famously known as A-Mei) met with fans who had responded to her call to reach out to children in need. Angel’s Share graciously played host to this exclusive event, which was generously sponsored by Country City Investment.

This event was World Vision’s and A-Mei’s way of saying thank you to her fans for giving hope to children living in impoverished communities around Asia and Africa through their sponsorship. A child sponsor herself, A-Mei identified with these individuals and thanked them for doing their bit in the fight against poverty.

She described a recent trip she made to India with World Vision, highlighting an encounter with a HIV-positive 10-year-old boy. An innocent victim of the deadly disease, this child was infected as a result of a blood transfusion at the hospital while being treated for jaundice. A-Mei talked about how, through no fault of his own, this child would never be able to lead a normal and healthy life.

However, with the faithful and generous contributions by child sponsors all over the world, there is hope for a brighter future for children such as this little boy. Ms Serena Tan, child sponsor and President of the Singapore A-Mei Fan Club, said, “Watching the video of A-Mei in India, I was really touched by the interaction between A-Mei and the children. There’s so much that needs to be done and each of us needs to do our bit to help.”

The evening ended on a special note with each sponsor receiving an autographed picture folder of their sponsored child, along with a hug from the superstar herself!
