The people of Qinghai slept, warm in their homes, safe from the biting cold outside. They were totally unaware of the rude awakening that would change their lives. A 7.1 Richter earthquake jolted them on the morning of 14 April 2010. Till date, the quake has claimed at least 2,000 lives with 10,000 people injured.
More than 1,000 aftershocks followed. They have razed 85% of the structures in the area. To make matters worse for the survivors, winter has set in. Elderly survivors and children are especially at risk in these conditions. The World Vision assessment team travelled 10 hours by road to the remote region after the airport was shut down. Difficulty of access has been hampering rescue efforts.
