CHINA QINGHAI EARTHQUAKE RELIEF

More than 600 people have died and 10,000 are reported injured after a 7.1 magnitude earthquake rocked Qinghai Province, a remote area of western China, on 14 April.

Local news sources report that more than 85% of the buildings in Jiegu town have been damaged or destroyed and telecommunications are down.

The quake struck at 7:49 am local time when most people were asleep, resulting in a high number of casualties due to damaged buildings. It was preceded by a 4.7 magnitude tremor at 5:39 a.m.

The epicenter is located in Jiegu Township, in the county of Yushu, Qinghai Province - about 820 km from the provincial capital of Xining City, said the China National Seismological Network.
