Beyond Borders 2009: One Year, One School

A joint community project by World Vision and Procter & Gamble (P&G), Beyond Borders aims to not only improve the lives of Asia’s underprivileged children but more importantly, it hopes to instill in Singaporean children a civic consciousness that goes “beyond borders” to help needy children who are living off the shores of Singapore in small but meaningful ways.

In 2006, P&G employees, along with over 35,000 primary and secondary school students in Singapore participated in the Beyond Borders programme by collecting and raising almost S$48,000 worth of old newspapers and clothing to benefit more than 77,577 needy children in Asia.

This year, World Vision Singapore is partnering with P&G again in Beyond Borders 2009, themed “One Year, One School”, to be launched on 11 August 2009 in conjunction with International Youth Day. Proceeds from “One Year, One School” will help construct a school building in Xieng Nguen, Laos, and provide children with essential school supplies such as school bags and stationery through Kids’ Kits, a World Vision programme.

Students from approximately 35 primary and secondary schools throughout Singapore will raise funds by collecting newspapers and old clothing from August to November 2009. To help students appreciate why and how they are improving the lives of needy children in Laos, World Vision will conduct presentations at each participating school.

At the end of the programme, student representatives from all participating schools will also be involved in a Kids’ Kits packing event as a grand finale. In addition, the top three performing schools will be recognised in a prize presentation ceremony at the end of the year.
Through programmes like Beyond Borders 2009: One Year, One School, we hope that children in Singapore will understand that they, too, can make a difference in another person’s life and more importantly, learn lessons for life that will take them beyond their classroom walls.
